“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” ― Aristotle

We will be reviewing numeral formation and learn how to spell number words. I am also having students create number sentences based in the date. E.g Today is the 15th so we made number sentences for 15.

Language Arts

We made another class booklet. This time students had to complete two pages with words that rhyme.

I have been doing extensive work with the class on sight word development.

I have also been working with the class on tricky chunks: ch, sh, th, and ing. We have been identifying these chunks on the Smartboard during the Morning Mystery Message and all the poems we learn.

I have updated the books in the froggy book bags. We have been practising reading these just right books every day. We have also been reading our booklet of poems where I challenge students to find a sight word or a tricky chunk.

Last week we made butterflies. They are hanging in the classroom along with positive and negative images if hands.

Ms McKnight did the following

In science we are studying insects. By the end of the unit students should be able to describe the life cycle and name the attributes of insects.

We went outside first thing this morning. We ran a couple if laps around the field then visited the garden and checked on our plot. We hunted for critters. We found worms (not insects because they don’t have six legs) and an ant.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the last term of Kindergarten. We were all excited to see each other after Spring Break. We have a garden plot in the back of the school where we planted various greens prior to the break. On Tuesday we headed outside to see what had sprouted. It is very exciting. We will be planting more in our plot as the month progresses.

In math we are learning about volume. Students are learning how to predict, compare, and estimate capacity.

For the next couple of weeks in art we will be learning about and reproducing art in the style of Henri Matisse.

The week prior to Spring Break I instituted a new routine. Every Thursday morning we hold a class meeting. We sit around the perimeter of the carpet where we all have the opportunity to share our thoughts and feelings. We pass a stone egg around the circle (see below for a photo). If an individual wishes not to share he or she says “pass”. When sharing the focus needs to remain on ourselves. We use I statements to share our feelings.

The class made a book this week inspired by the book Goodnight Moon.
