Home Reading

on November 6, 2012

I sent home today Nightingale’s Home Reading bags. Your child selected a home reading book from amongst the designated collection of books which are kept by the entrance to the classroom.

Your child may keep the book in the bag for as long as it interests him/her. I set aside time in the morning for students to exchange the book during morning music listening and announcements. The purpose of home reading is to encourage a love of reading and to expose students to a variety of genres. Home reading can be done together as a family or individually. I have taught the class that there are three ways of reading a book: read the pictures, read the words, or retell from memory. Reading the pictures is a good strategy to gain information about the text. A student can practise making inferences by studying the pictures and making predictions what will occur next.

Also in the bag is a log to record books read. Extra log sheets are kept in a marked envelope in one of the home reading book tubs. Please keep the home reading bag and book in a safe place as the bags and books are reused from year to year. Replacement cost for the home reading bag is $5.00 .
